Winger makes like he'll step forward with Russell but tricks his friend, who is punished with 24 hours of garbage duty. Hulka continues to ride Winger until one night when Hulka addresses everyone in the barracks, saying that he knows a few of the men have been slipping off the base at night without permission. In their first march out together, Winger and Russell rally everyone by getting them to sing "Do Wah Diddy" as a cadence. Winger suddenly finds himself out of favor with his comrades. When Winger suggests they be allowed to get more sleep, Hulka changes their agenda from a 5-mile run to a 10-mile run. The next morning the platoon is rousted out of bed at 5am. Hulka isn't impressed and orders everyone to sleep. Winger is the last to speak and tries to kiss up to Hulka as their leader. One recruit, Dewey "Ox" Oxberger, says he wants to lose weight and gain the respect of his fellow trainees and women in general.
Each man introduces himself and tells the platoon why they chose to join the Army. The guys later have their heads shaved and are given their clothing and taken to their barracks. Hulka makes an example of Winger by having him do 50 pushups outside the hall. When he first addresses Winger, Russell and all the other recruits, Winger cracks a joke that he thinks Hulka didn't hear. A few days later they arrive at their training base and meet their drill instructor, Sgt Hulka. The two drive to an Army recruitment office together and sign up.

Russell tells him he's crazy & challenges Winger to do five full pushups. Winger tells him that Anita left him and that he's thinking about joining the Army to take a new direction in life.

After teaching his class how to sing "Da-Do-Run-Run", he goes to Winger's apartment. Winger's friend, Russell Zimsky, is bored with his job teaching English to immigrants. He also ends up dropping and ruining the pizza he'd brought home. Returning to his apartment, he sees his Mustang being repossessed and finds out his girlfriend is leaving him because he lacks motivation. When she tells Winger that he's a terrible cabbie, he abandons her and the cab on the George Rogers Clark Bridge. In one day he tangles with a fare that won't pay him and an annoying, highly-demanding woman who has several very heavy suitcases and wants to be driven to the airport.

John Winger is a taxi driver working in Louisville, Kentucky. John and Russell, with Stella and Louise's help, will have to show their true mettle as US army soldiers and in the process test the capabilities of the EM-50 to rescue their platoon without the rest of the US army knowing what's going on, and thus without any assistance beyond themselves. In the process, the rest of the platoon, Hulka, and Hulka's immediate superior, self-absorbed Captain Stillman, get caught unofficially behind enemy Communist lines in Czechoslovakia. John and Russell decide to take the EM-50 for an unauthorized test drive to visit Stella and Louise who have been reassigned to West Germany. But what happens during basic leads to their entire platoon being assigned to an overseas mission in Italy, to test a new urban assault vehicle, the EM-50 project. Their entire platoon is in jeopardy of not graduating.
Two of their saving graces are Stella and Louise, two MPs who get them out of one scrape after another. However, it is still John that is constantly butting heads with their drill sergeant, Sergeant Hulka. In basic training, they are only two of a bunch of misfits that comprise their platoon. At the end of a very bad day when he realizes his life has gone and is going nowhere, John Winger is able to convince his best friend, Russell Ziskey, whose life is not much better, to enlist in the army, despite they not being obvious soldier material.
